DD Form 214
The DD Form 214 is one of the most important documents in a Veteran's career. This document is mandatory to apply for any educational or disability benefit including the Aid & Attendance benefit which will help with the cost of In-Home Care. If a Veteran does not have a copy of his/her DD214, there are a couple different ways they can obtain a copy. First of all, the Veteran can visit, http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records.
Secondly, the Veteran can visit the Horry County Veteran Affairs Office at the above address and a trained staff member will assist the Veteran in filling out the appropriate paperwork. Appointments are available by calling (843) 915-5480.

Aid & Attendance will help with the cost of In-Home Care.
The VA will pay for a Caregiver to come to your home.

If you are a Veteran and are in the need of In-home Care give Frank Weinstein at Home Care of Myrtle Beach a call 843-249-5541

Veteran's ID Card
Congress has recently passed a new law that will provide identification cards for Veteran. The cards however will not be available until some time in 2017. Until issued, if a Veteran needs proof that he or she is in fact a Veteran, they can have their Veteran Status designated on their drivers license. The Veteran must take their discharge paperwork to the SC Department of Motor Vehicles to have this done. If the Veteran's discharge was prior to 1050, he or she must provide the DMV with a "Certificate of Discharge " or "Enlisted Separation Paper". If the Veteran was discharged after 1950, he or she must provide a copy of their DD 214 form that indicates an "Honorable" discharge. No other documents will be accepted. Military dependents, spouses, and civilian employees are not eligible. The cost to add the Veteran designation to your driver's license is only $1.00.

Home Loans
The Veterans Administration helps Service Members, Veterans, and eligible surviving spouses become homeowners. The VA provides a home loan guaranty benefit to help purchase, repair or adapt a home for a Veterans personal occupancy. This is a guaranty to the lender, the VA DOES NOT loan money to individuals. VA Home Loans are provided by Private lenders, such as banks and mortgage companies. The VA guarantees a portion of the loan, enabling the lender to provide the Veteran with more favorable terms, such as 0% down and 100% financing. There are two ways to apply for your Certificate of Eligibility for a VA Home Loan:
1.  The Veteran or eligible spouse can visit the Horry or Georgetown County VA offices
2.  The Veteran or eligible spouse can apply directly through the lender. Applying directly through the lender in most cases is faster.
In either case, the applicant will need a copy of their DD 214 form and a completed VA form 26-1880

Vocational Rehabilitation
Is a program which helps eligible disabled Veterans get and keep lasting, suitable jobs. This program is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible Veterans in order to obtain the education or training required to secure a suitable job. In order to qualify, the Veteran must meet certain Criteria including having an "Other than Dishonorable" discharge and their disability must be at least 20% disabling as rated by the VA. In order to apply for Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation, the Veteran must provide a copy of their DD 214 form, along with a completed VA Form 28-1900, and their disability rating from the VA. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact the Horry County VA Office 2830 Oak Street Conway, SC 29526 Phone: (843) 915-5480.

Service Connection Disability
In order for a Veteran to receive compensation for a disability, they must first prove the disability is connected to their military service. This means that the disability must be linked to an injury or condition which occurred during military service. The link is most often established by medical records from the treatment facility which treated the injury or condition. The Veteran must have a clear diagnosis of an injury or condition. They also must currently be receiving treatment for that injury or condition. Once you have submitted all the required documentation the VA will evaluate it and if approved compensation can be disbursed. Remember the "rule of thumb" is diagnosis, treatment, and compensation.

Legal Services
If a Veteran needs legal services, he or she is urged to contact South Carolina Legal Services to receive help. South Carolina Legal Services is part of the Veterans Legal Corps With Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps and they work exclusively with Veteran Clients. They assist low-income South Carolinian's in civil matters. For further information call 843-266-2162 or visit their website at http://www.sclegal.org
